Guest artist interview with Judy Grant [ ep.1]: Judy, what are you selling?
Art Dialog with Christy and Carol interviewed guest artist Judy Grant, a watercolorist who has struggled with the challenges of selling her art. In our first episode, Judy talks about her inner critic and finding a balance between creativity and marketing.
Guest artist interview with Judy Grant [ ep.2]: Judy, who are your people (your target audience)?
Christy and Carol brainstorm with Judy Grant, accomplished watercolor artist, about the target audiences for her bird paintings and discuss her feelings about selling her work.
Guest artist interview with Judy Grant [ ep.3]: Judy, how do you price your work?
We put artist Judy Grant in the hot seat and discuss what happens when artists use intuition to set their prices.
How can you tell if someone is trying to defraud you using your art as the hook?
Everyone is potentially susceptible to fraud, but artists are uniquely vulnerable because we are so desperate for validation, community, income, and recognition.
Fraud can come in many forms. Maybe you got a text or a DM from someone who says they like your art. You talk. They say they can connect you with people who have a gallery. They have contacts that can help you sell more art. Then they tell you about a way they’re making money doing something else “in the market.” If you’re lucky, you block them. But if they’ve done a good job establishing a connection with you, you might listen to the pitch. You might give them some money. Not much at the beginning. But more later. This happened to Jim Pescott.
We interviewed artist Jim Pescott about his recent misadventure with some slick fraudsters who used sophisticated psychological techniques to build rapport and trust and subsequently steal Jim’s life savings. Jim describes the approach the criminals used to gain his trust and points out some red flags that could help you avoid a financial tragedy of your own.
