Art Dialog with Christy and Carol is a video series where we talk about how you can sell more art.

Your work matters. Get it into the world.

Your inner critic: friend or foe. Or possibly both…

Do you have a voice in your head that tells you your creative work is not quite good enough, you need to keep working, possibly don’t actually finish that mess you’re working on now, and didn’t the high school art teacher tell you not to do it that way and, Really?? Meet your . In this video we talk about how to recognize its voice, two ways to get it to be quiet, and how to keep creating no matter what it says to you. Also check out Christy’s book, Artists: Prosper! on Amazon for more support.

What do artists and entrepreneurs have in common?

Entrepreneurs spend their lives coming up with ideas and creating businesses based on them. The culture greatly benefits from this trying of new things, whether they fail or not. Because from the ashes of failure, often arise new ways of solving problems that have never been tried. Artists are the ultimate entrepreneurs. We make things that have never been seen before, just like business entrepreneurs. Then we have to figure out how to sell them.

In this video we talk about how to separate making your art (the creative side) from selling your art (the business side), what’s challenging about doing this, and what’s normal and natural about “failing” to sell your art. You’re introducing new ideas to the world, and you have to help the world understand your vision. The Freakonomics podcast that talks about this is here: https://freakonomics.com/podcast/how-…

How do I start marketing my art?

There are four simple (but not easy) steps to marketing your art: Figuring out what you sell, Pricing it, Finding your people (your target audience), and Talking to them. We discussed how to choose what to sell and how to price it on previous videos. In this one we talk about finding your people and making relationships with them, plus the (totally normal but unnerving) thing that might happen to you once you make your work public.

What happens if my marketing doesn’t work?

Here’s the good news: if your marketing isn’t working, it’s very likely it’s not because your work isn’t good. Quality of work is rarely the issue.

What is the issue is this: most likely you haven’t identified who Your People are—those people who need and want what you make. The other two possible issues are that you haven’t made relationships with these people, and you haven’t made it easy for them to buy from you.

Listen as we talk about these common issues almost every creative person faces, and what to do about them.

What if I feel I HAVE TO make a living with my art?

Is your calling, the reason you were born, to make (and sell) your art? If this is you, it’s possible, AND it takes more than hoping the universe recognizes your genius and showers you with money.

We talk about what it takes to set yourself up to sell your work, and why doing that can actually be fun, or at least enlightening and a major growth opportunity.
